MILWAUKEE - A heavy home schedule and plenty of milestones to look for in MSOE Athletics this week.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (7-11, 4-9 - L6)
Women's Basketball will look to get back on the winning track this week with three games on the schedule. It starts with the makeup of Dec. 17's postponed game against Marian. Edgewood then comes to the Kern Center Wednesday and the Raiders visit Aurora Saturday. Holly Denfeld remains entrenched in milestone watch. With seven games remaining in the regular season, she is just 24 rebounds from becoming the third player in NACC history with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. She is also chasing Catherine Chappell's school record of 1,790 career points. She has 1,643 entering play this week.
Wrestling showed well last weekend with five athletes placing over two meets. No Raider did as well as Devin Mahnke, who knocked off a pair of ranked wrestlers at 197 pounds to take second at the Pete Willson Invitational. The meet is one of the largest in the country with 34 teams in attendance. Devin McCune also won four matches at the meet to take eighth at 174 pounds. At the Harper College Open, a meet open to freshmen and juniors, Jack Rathburn was second at 149 pounds, Evan Carter was fifth at 157 and Ryan Snyder took sixth at 165. A dual meet with UW-Oshkosh is on the schedule for this week at the Kern Center Tuesday, followed by the Don Parker Open on the weekend.
MEN'S BASKETBALL (8-9, 7-6 - L1)
Men's Basketball is coming off a tough three-game week last week. Despite a loss to Rockford Saturday, the Raiders sit in good shape in the NACC standings at 7-6 and in fourth place. The team's next win will be head coach Brian Miller's 200th at MSOE, making him the third coach in department history to the milestone (Len VandenBoom/Baseball; Mark Ostapina/Hockey). Collin Seubert is also on a milestone watch, as he needs just 66 points to become MSOE's 15th men's basketball 1,000-point scorer. The Raiders are on the road this week with games against Wisconsin Lutheran and Aurora.
(#11) MEN'S VOLLEYBALL (0-1 - L1)
Men's Volleyball got its season off to a disappointing start with a five-set loss at Cardinal Stritch last week. There were, however, plenty of positives to take away from the performance: four different Raiders had 12+ kills while setter Quin Krisik finished with 62 assists, his second career 60-assist match and the fourth-most in a match in school history. Jake Christensen led the team in scoring with 14 kills and five service aces to go with 10 digs on the day. MSOE jumps right into MCVL play this week with home matches with North Central and Lakeland on the horizon.
HOCKEY (8-7-4, 5-6-3 - L1)
Hockey is coming off a weekend series split with Marian, taking Friday's game 3-1 and falling 4-3. Brett Wagner scored three goals on the weekend, netting the game-winner on Friday and lighting the lamp twice Saturday as the Raiders came back from a 3-2 deficit to tie the score. MSOE remains in the hunt for a spot in the Harris Cup Playoffs and will take on Lawrence in a Thursday-Friday series this week.
Track & Field put both of its teams in second place last weekend at UW-Parkside's Green & White Invite. On the women's side, Shana Cook tacked on another foot to her school weight throw record in winning the event by over four and a half feet. Meanwhile, Michael Van Alstyne and the 4x400m relay each posted wins on the men's side. The teams are back in action Saturday at the Pointer Invitational, hosted by UW-Stevens Point.
The Men's Tennis team opens its season with a pair of matches this weekend. Check GO-RAIDERS.com later this week for a season preview.
