MARCH 27: Raider Weekly Preview

MILWAUKEE - The start of league play is the theme of the week for many of the Raider teams. Baseball, Softball, and Men's Tennis will each get started. Meanwhile, Lacrosse and Men's Volleyball will look to keep hot runs going in their schedules. Track & Field (hopefully) and Golf are set for the beginning of their spring seasons, as well.

Ian's Pizza RAIDER OF THE WEEK: Clay Gustafson, Lacrosse

BASEBALL (5-7, 0-0 NACC - W2)

Baseball has last week's slate of games, a doubleheader against Illinois Tech, moved to Monday, giving the team a week off. Midweek twinbills against the Scarlet Hawks and Northland Thursday should prepare the Raiders for the start of league play on the weekend. MSOE opens at home against Benedictine Saturday and plays at Concordia Chicago in a rematch of the 2016 NACC Championship game.

SOFTBALL (7-5, 0-0 NACC - W1)

Softball shook off the rust with a doubleheader split last Friday against Northland in its home opener. The Raiders, who had not played since March 4 in Florida, dropped the first game but came back for a 10-2 win in six innings in game two. Every hitter had a base hit in the opener and Emily Snow extended her hitting streak to 10 games with hits in both ends of the doubleheader. The story of the day was Caitlyn Moran, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in each game. She stole a couple bases and legged out a double and triple on the day. MSOE plays a mid-week doubleheader at Beloit Wednesday then dives into league play with home games against Marian Saturday and a pair on the road at Dominican Sunday.

LACROSSE (2-4, 1-0 MLC - W2)

Lacrosse got into the win column with a pair of decisive road wins at Carroll and Fontbonne by a combined score of 43-3. The Carroll match was the team's first shutout of the season (20-0) while the 23-3 rout at Fontbonne set a school record for goals in a game and got the Raiders off to a 1-0 start in league play. Clay Gustafson became the program's all-time leading scorer at Fontbonne, surpassing Brent Finnegan's mark of 121 points. He enters play this week, with home matches against Beloit and Monmouth, with 124 points on 77 goals and 47 assists. He's already the program leader in career assists and now trails Finnegan by just seven goals.

MEN'S TENNIS (1-14, 0-0 NACC - L11)

Men's Tennis returned to the court with a hard-fought match at Carroll last weekend. Though the Raiders lost 6-3, they did push a pair of singles matches to three sets before succumbing to the host Pioneers. One of those matches had a 10-8 tiebreaker, showing how tantalizing close the team was to a better result. Austin Campbell won his #3 doubles match with Tyler Haanen and won in straight sets at #5 singles to lead MSOE. The team opens NACC play this week with matches at Wisconsin Lutheran and Aurora on the weekend.

GOLF

Golf returns to the course this weekend at the Aurora Spring Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Raiders last played at the opening two rounds of the NACC Championships in October. They currently sit tied for seventh when the spring portion of the tourney gets underway in late April.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL (15-2, 11-1 MCVL - W7)

Men's Volleyball bounced back from a four-game setback to #7 Carthage on Wednesday to sweep past Lakeland and Marian in a pair of road matches over the weekend. The two wins clinched the Raiders' place in the MCVL Tournament and came in very different fashions. Friday was a defensive slugfest with the Muskies where MSOE had 83 digs over just three sets and held the home team in negative hitting. Then, the Raiders hit .379 to sweep aside the Sabres Saturday. This week has games against the Michigan contingent of the league, as MSOE heads to Olivet Friday and Adrian Saturday.

TRACK & FIELD (Men's / Women's)

The Track & Field will make a third attempt at opening the outdoor season this weekend. After back-to-back weekends of canceled trips to Indiana, the Raiders plan to head to Carroll University in Waukesha for the Carroll Invitational. Jerica Kotarak was the team's last competitor of the indoor season, taking 11th in both the long and triple jump events at the NCAA Championships March 10-11.
