MILWAUKEE - MSOE sees a big week ahead for Lacrosse as it plays for a post-season bid. Men's Tennis plays for a chance at a share of a league crown while Softball looks to keep streaking to the end of a historic regular season. It's a full slate of action, as Baseball, Golf, Rowing, and Track & Field are all in action.
BASEBALL (17-14, 8-6 NACC - L1)
Baseball is nearing the home stretch in the regular season. The Raiders play at UW-La Crosse Tuesday, then take on Dominican and Concordia Wisconsin in their final full weekend of the regular season. MSOE is coming off an exciting sweep against Aurora, overcoming a late 6-2 deficit in game one. After pulling within 6-4 to start the ninth inning Andres Oselio and Jimmy Carrington hit back-to-back home runs and Owen Burnikel later hit a walk-off, two-run shot to win the game.
SOFTBALL (25-9, 14-4 NACC - W6)
Softball is riding high after going 7-1 last week. The Raiders split with Benedictine, then swept Alverno, Rockford, and Edgewood with four shutouts Friday through Sunday. Shannon Curtis went 4-1 with a 1.98 ERA, two shutouts, and 43 strikeouts in 35.1 innings pitched in the circle and Emily Snow went 18-for-28 (.643) with 11 runs scored and 10 RBIs in eight games at the plate with two 4-hit games and six multi-hit games to lead the way. Curtis set a NACC record with 18 strikeouts at Edgewood Sunday in a 10-inning shutout. Meanwhile, Snow broke the NACC record with her 18th double of the season and extended her streak of games reaching base safely to 31 games. MSOE has already won a school-record 25 games this season and has qualified for the NACC Tournament for just the second time since joining the conference before the 2008 season.
Curtis and Snow swept the NACC Pitcher and Position Player of the Week Awards.
MEN'S TENNIS (7-16, 6-1 NACC - L1)
Men's Tennis finishes the regular season Wednesday at Concordia Wisconsin. The Raiders swept Lakeland 9-0 Wednesday to move to 6-1 in NACC play. With a win, MSOE can claim a share of the league regular-season title. The team has already clinched a top-three seed in the NACC Tournament, which starts May 1.
LACROSSE (7-7, 4-3 MLC - W2)
Lacrosse is playing for its first league tournament bid this Wednesday when it hosts Benedictine. The Raiders won two games last week, including a 13-8 win Saturday against Cornell. That win put MSOE in charge of its own destiny. A win secures the No. 4 seed. Clay Gustafson set five school game and season records in Wednesday's game at North Central (Minn.), including nine assists and 14 points in a game. He also set season records for goals (Now: 39), assists (27), and points (64). Gustafson and Pat Collins swept the MLC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week Awards.
Golf opened the week by finishing off an eighth-place finish at the NACC Championships. Eric Fulsaas repeated as an all-league selection by taking fifth at the tournament. The Raiders finish the campaign this weekend at the Edgewood Spring Invitational Friday and the St. Norbert Invitational Saturday and Sunday.
Track & Field had another strong outing last weekend at the St. Norbert Invitational. Austin Wright won two events for the men's team, the 3000m steeplechase and the javelin. On the woman's side, Jessica Bilskie (400mH), Becky Sondelski (Steeplechase), and Maia Heineck (Javelin) each posted wins. The Raiders are at the Beloit Relays this Friday and Sunday in their final meet before the NACC Championships May 5-6.
Rowing competed against the University of Wisconsin for a second-straight week, making strides against the Badgers. The Freshman 4 gave UW the stiffest competition, finishing just 1.4 seconds off the pace. This weekend, the Raiders head to the MACRA Championships in Batavia, Ohio.
