VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Seniors Austin Stueck and Connor Patterson each topped 20 points, but it was not enough as the MSOE men's basketball team fell to No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan on the first day of the Marlin Tip-Off Tournament Friday evening at the Batten Center.
The Raiders (0-2) trailed by 15 at halftime, but outscored the Marlins (1-1) by one in the second half to keep the game close.
Stueck finished with a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds to lead MSOE, while Patterson notched 22 points and seven boards before fouling out.
Khory Moore led the home team with 22 points and Tim Jones was the only other player in double-digits.
VWU used a 10-2 run early in the first half to jump out to a 22-12 midway through the first half. It then closed out the frame on an 8-0 run to take a 43-28 lead into halftime. The Marlins' lead would peak at 18 before the Raiders pull as close as seven points on several occasions down the stretch.
MSOE shot 35.8 percent in the game, including 4-of-15 from three-point range. The team also got to the free throw line 27 times, making 17 (.630). Virginia Wesleyan shot 40 percent in the game, vut the difference came in ball control, as the home team forced the Red & White into 22 turnovers and commited just 10.
The Raiders close out the Marlin Tip-Off Tournament Saturday, taking on Baruch in the consolation game at noon central time.
