MILWAUKEE – Senior Collin Seubert scored a game-high 15 points as the MSOE basketball team prepared for the 2016-17 with an 88-58 exhibition loss to Milwaukee Friday evening at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.
The game counted as an exhibition for the Division III Raiders, while the Division I Panthers won their season-opener under first-year head coach LaVall Jordan.
Seubert led the team in scoring despite playing much of the second half on four fouls. Senior Alex Darville added nine points, four rebounds and three assists for MSOE.
Five players scored in double-figures for Milwaukee, led by Cody Wichmann and Brock Stull with 13 points apiece, while Stull added 11 rebounds for a double-double. Cameron Harvey and Jeremy Johnson had 11 points each and Jeremiah Bell notched 10.
A big size difference between the two teams played a role in the Panthers' ability to steadily pull away on the night. The home team outscored the Raiders 46-22 in the paint and had a decisive 48-28 rebounding advantage, leading to 18 second-chance points.
MSOE shot 32 percent from the field, struggling from beyond the arc to the tune of 5-for-24 shooting (20.8 percent). Milwaukee, on the other hand, shot 54 percent on the night, though shooting marginally better from three-point range at 30.4 percent.
The game was valuable for the Raiders, who are replacing four starters from last season. Facing Division I competition, several players got valuable experience in enhanced roles. Senior Dylan Sommerfeld and junior Greg Pigg had six points each, while Darville got to the free throw line 12 times on the night, making seven.
MSOE opens its regular season Nov. 19 at Beloit.
