AURORA, Illinois – Senior Tegan Miles scored 20 points on 10-of-14 shooting to pace the MSOE men's basketball team to an 84-81 victory over Aurora Wednesday night on Lancaster Court.
The Raiders (7-5, 6-2 NACC) led by as many as eight points inside the final two minutes but fended off the Spartans (6-7, 5-3 NACC) by making five of their last six free throws.
Miles added three assists as he led four starters in double-figures. Sophomore Matthew Kirmse tallied 16 points and junior Jason Palesse had 13 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Senior Nolan Henton chipped in 11 points.
Marcus Myers finished with a game-high 23 points for the home team. Matt Dunn scored 16 points and Max Vickers had a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The game was back-and-forth all night with MSOE taking the lead for good on a three-point play with 8:28 remaining at 61-58. The team held the lead and pushed it to 79-71 at the 1:38 mark. The lead was still five at 81-76 with 33 seconds to go on a pair of Henton free throws.
Aurora answered the charity tosses with a quick three-pointer and, after a single free throw, benefited from a steal and layup to make it a one-point game at 82-81 with 10 seconds to go. Palesse then hit a pair of free throws three seconds later to re-establish a three-point lead. The Spartans then saw a game-tying three-point try miss the mark.
The Raiders shot an efficient 54.2 percent from the field, despite a tough 4-for-17 from beyond the arc. Aurora finished at 46.3 percent shooting and was also cold from deep, hitting on just 7-of-26.
The Raiders return to the court Saturday at Benedictine.
