Men’s Basketball Shoots Past Marian in Second Half

FOND DU LAC, Wisconsin – Five players scored in double-figures and the MSOE men's basketball team shot over 60 percent in the second half to overtake Marian for a 72-60 victory Saturday at Sadoff Gymnasium.

The Raiders (6-0, 2-0 NACC) overcame a 10-point, first-half by outscoring the Sabres () 50-33 in the second to match their best-ever start to a season.

Junior Travis Ballard and freshman Michael Pitrof led the way with 12 points each, as Ballard was a perfect 6-for-6 shooting from the field with seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Senior Jason Palesse finished with 11 points and seven assists while juniors Jake Gebert and Matthew Kirmse had 10 points each.

Sophomores Sammy Linn and Anthony Bartman chipped in eight points each.

Tavaris McCullough scored a game-high 17 points for Marian. Tristan Van Ess added 10.

The hosts led throughout the first half, opening a 10-point lead at 28-18 on a layup with 3:18 before halftime. The Red & White halved the deficit by halftime to go into the break trailing 31-26.

Back-to-back three-pointers to open the second half game MSOE its first lead of the day. After a Sabre three-pointer, another trey for the Raiders gave them the lead for good at 40-36. A 9-0 run expanded the lead to 53-38 on a four-point play by Kirmse with 11:18 to play.

Marian would get only as close as eight points while the Raiders would lead by 16 in the final minutes.

MSOE shot 55.1 percent for the game and went 7-of-11 from three-point range. The team also got to the free throw line 22 times, making 15, compared to just eight attempts for the Sabres. MU shot 44.1 percent in the game and was 6-for-15 from beyond the arc.

The Red & White is off to a 6-0 start for the first time since 2010-11 and for the fourth time under head coach Brian Miller (2006-07, 2008-09).

The Raiders return to the floor Thursday, hosting Wisconsin Lutheran at Hotchkin Arena.
