RIVER FOREST, Illinois - The MSOE men's basketball team defeated Dominican University on a snowy February evening 82-63 at the Igini Sports Forum.
The Raiders (20-4, 15-4 NACC) traveled to Illinois rival Dominican University (3-20, 3-14 NACC) in search of getting back on the winning track as they set their sights on the NACC tournament. The win is one shy of tying the record for most wins in a season (21), a record that the Raiders are well aware of, but put in the back of their mind. The Raiders are looking to plow ahead into the NACC tournament and enjoy the records as they come.
Junior Matthew Kirmse led the team with 23 points, shooting 8-of-14 from the field, along with 3-of-8 from three-point land. Jason Palesse and Michael Pitrof had solid games as each chipped in 12 points. The Raiders capitalized on points-off-turnovers outscoring the Stars 23 to 12 in the game.
Dominican was poised to cause some damage to the Raiders as three players scored in double-figures. Chris Burel led the team with 16 points, followed by Isaac Moore (15) and Marcus Watson (14). That effort contributed to a tightly contested match until the Raiders eventually broke away to lead by 22 points in the second half.
Coach Miller noted that his team showed great mental toughness as both the starters and notably the reserves played a tough second half that made it difficult on the Stars.
MSOE shot 55 percent from the field in the game, including a 6-for-15 effort from three-point range. The team did go 14-for-18 at the free throw line. The Stars finished the game at 39 percent from the field with 8-for-26 coming from beyond the arc.
The Raiders return to the Kern Center and Hotchkin Arena Saturday to face Marian to close out the regular part of the season.
