ADRIAN, Michigan – Senior Gage Christianson scored two goals and junior Zach Woodman made 40 saves to lead the MSOE hockey team to a 3-2 victory over No. 3/4 Adrian in its season-opener Friday evening at Arrington Ice Arena.
The Raiders (1-0, 1-0 NCHA) knocked off the highly-ranked Bulldogs (0-1, 0-1 NCHA) in their season-opener for the second-straight season.
Adrian scored first just 3:38 into the game, but MSOE then responded with three unanswered goals. Junior Zach Simpson quickly equalized just 2:53 later with a power play goal, off assists from sophomores Eric Tien and Michael Romund.
After being outshot 23-6 in the opening period, the Raiders got on track in the second period behind Christianson's two goals and a 14-8 shot edge in the frame.
Christianson put the Red & White ahead at 7:41 of the period off assists from Simpson and Tien. Then, just under five minutes later, he lit the lamp with MSOE on the man advantage with help from junior Clint Garris and sophomore Matthew Romund.
The Bulldogs pulled a goal back on the power play with 11 minutes remaining, but that was as close as the home team would get. The Red & White also withheld an extra attacker when AC pulled the goalie with just under two minutes remaining.
Woodman got off to a big start with 22 saves in the first period and kept Adrian at bay all night. The Bulldogs finished with a 42-25 shot advantage on the night. MSOE went 2-for-7 on the power play, while killing off six of AC's seven power plays.
The series wraps up Saturday. The puck drops at 2:05 p.m. CST.
