STEVENS POINT, Wisconsin – Three different players scored goals and freshman Rock Boynton remained unbeaten in goal as the No. 12/13 MSOE hockey team defeated UW-Stout 3-1 in the consolation game of the Holiday Tournament hosted by UW-Stevens Point Saturday.
The Raiders (6-1-1) scored twice in the opening period and tacked on an empty-netter in getting past the Blue Devils (3-6-1).
Tien opened the scoring just past the midway point of the opening period, as the Red & White was awarded a penalty shot after a tripping penalty was called. Tien converted the penalty at 10:46 for his first goal of the season.
Redmon then doubled the team's advantage in the last two minutes of the period. With 1:43 remaining in the frame, the defenseman scored off assists from freshmen Chandler Watson and Adam Ostrowski. The points for the rookies came in their collegiate debuts while Redmon's goal stood up as the winner.
UW-Stout pulled a goal back in the second period 5:48 into the frame.
The Raiders held off the Blue Devils' attempts to even the score, even when they pulled their goalie with 54 seconds remaining in regulation. Rogers made Stout pay and put the game away, slotting the puck into the empty net with two seconds remaining.
UWS held a 33-22 shot advantage in the game. MSOE was whistled for five penalties and Stout four in the game. The teams went a combined 0-for-7 on power plays with the Blue Devils coming up empty on five man advantages.
The Raiders return to league play their next time out, hosting Lake Forest Friday at the Kern Center.
