GENEVA, Illinois – Freshman Will Gauthier broke a 1-1 tie midway through the second period and senior Zach Woodman made 35 saves to lead the No. 11/13 MSOE hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Aurora Saturday afternoon at Fox Valley Ice Arena.
The Raiders (7-2-1, 4-2 NCHA) scored first then answered the Spartans' (2-7-2; 1-4-1 NCHA) equalizer with a game-winner less than eight minutes later.
Senior Chris Hinrichs opened the scoring with a power play goal at 11:25 of the first period. The goal was assisted by senior Jerad Tafoya and freshman Nate Rogers. It was Hinrichs' third power play score of the season.
Behind Woodman, the Raiders then shut down the Spartans to clinch the game. Playing in his first game since Nov. 10, he made 17 saves in the second period alone and stopped eight shots in the third frame to keep his team ahead.
Aurora had a 6-on-4 for the final 43 seconds of regulation with a power play and empty net, but the Red & White limited the home team to just one shot on goal in that time without a stoppage.
MSOE conceded a sizable shot advantage for the second-straight game at 36-21. However, after allowing three power play goals Friday, the team killed off all seven man advantages in the game for the Spartans.
The Raiders are now off through the holidays, returning to the ice Dec. 29 vs. Marian at UW-Superior's Yellow Jacket Holiday Tournament.
