Hockey Drops Season Opener at UW-Eau Claire, 3-1

EAU CLAIRE, Wisconsin – Junior Evan Kearns scored the first goal of the season and sophomore Rock Boynton made 39 saves as the MSOE hockey team opened the 2018-19 season with a 3-1 loss at the hands of UW-Eau Claire Friday night at Hobbs Ice Center.

The Raiders (0-1) battled hard with the Blugolds (1-0) despite falling behind 3-0 in the game, pulling back a goal and playing the hosts even in the third period.

UW-Eau Claire, which is receiving votes in the national polls, opened the scoring at 8:50 of the opening period. The Bluegolds then lit the lamp on back-to-back power plays early in the second period to jump out to a 3-0 lead.

MSOE was able to pull back a goal late in the second period, with Kearns striking at 18:50 to make it 3-1. He was assisted by sophomore Stian Owens and freshman Brendan Ferguson on the goal.

After conceding a 30-14 shot advantage through the first two frames, the Red & White found some momentum in the third period. Shots were tied 12-12 as the Raiders fought for another score. Unfortunately, the score held.

For the game, UWEC finished with a 42-25 shot edge and converted on 2-of-7 power plays. MSOE came up empty with on five man advantages. Sophomore Garrett Gintoli led the team with four shots on goal in the game.

Boynton put together a strong night as he landed the season-opening start.

The Raiders continue their season-opening weekend road trip at No. 1 St. Norbert Saturday night.
