BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan scored nine unanswered goals to break open a 4-3 game and hand the MSOE lacrosse team a 13-3 loss in the season-opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Tucci Stadium.
The Raiders (0-1) rebounded from a 4-0 deficit to pull within 4-3, but the Titans (1-0) scored the game's final nine goals to pull away.
Evan Mok-Lamme and Colin Daly each scored twice in the first period to put IWU up 4-0.
Juniors Bent Finnegan and Zachary Dawiec then combined on a pair of goals to make it 4-2 by the end of the frame. Finnegan found the back of the net from Dawiec just 37 seconds after the Titans' fourth goal, then set up his teammate with 34 seconds to go in the period.
Sophomore Aaron Chun pulled the Raiders within one at 4-3 with a goal 1:10 into the second period, finishing off an assist from senior Thomas Winchell. That would be as close as MSOE would get, as Illinois Wesleyan responded with six more goals before halftime.
The Red and White defense stepped up in the second half, but not before IWU tacked on three more goals in the third period to provide for the final score.
Chun won 11-of-18 face-offs for MSOE and was one of three different players with three ground balls in the game. Senior Maxwell Winchell finished with a team-high four. Senior Adam Kocsis made 12 saves in his return to goal for the Raiders.
Mok-Lamme and Michael Julius each ended up with hat tricks for the Titans, while three players save time in goal. Steven Laduzinsky played more than half the game and made two saves for the win.
MSOE returns to action March 1, hosting Carthage at Viets Field.
