ST. LOUIS – Freshman Andrew Clemens scored twice and broke the school record for goals in a season and the Raider defense put forth a strong effort, but it was not enough as it dropped a tight contest, 7-4, Wednesday evening at Fontbonne.
The Raiders (2-11, 1-8 MLC) trailed the Griffins (3-12, 2-7 MLC) late in the match, but fought back to finish within three at the end.
Freshman Andrew Clemens scored two goals for MSOE, marking 10-straight games in which he found the back of the net. He pushed his rookie season total to 25 goals and broke junior Brent Finnegan's school record of 24 goals set last season. Clemens now has 34 points, increasing his record total in that category.
He finished with 13 shots in the game, while Finnegan added a goal on 16 shots. Sophomore Zachary Markell rounded out the scoring with a goal of his own.
Fontbonne provided all of the first-half offense. It scored four times in the opening quarter, including three times in 34 seconds in the final two minutes of the period. The Griffins added one goal in the second quarter and took a 6-0 lead with the first goal of the second half.
Clemens got the Raiders on the board late in the third quarter and Finnegan followed suit just 36 seconds later.
The home team scored again to push its lead to 7-2, but MSOE did not back down with a pair of down goals just 19 seconds apart. Clemens scored his second goal at 2:32 and Markell struck at 2:13.
The Raiders outshot Fontbonne 43-26, but Thomas Carroll kept the Griffins ahead with 26 saves. Junior Adam Kocsis stopped six shots on goal for MSOE. Juniors Max Wasscher and James Simonson added some defensive support in front of their goalie. Each forced four turnovers and Wasscher came away with nine ground balls and Simonson added seven.
Junior Jesus Arguelles also had nine ground balls in the midfield.
MSOE closes out the 2014 season Saturday, hosting Mount St. Joseph at Viets Field. The game starts at 1 p.m.
