MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The MSOE men's and women's soccer team are prepared to host the Raider Invitational this weekend, marking the regular season debut of the new MSOE Soccer Field and Milwaukee's first rooftop soccer game. There are a number of interesting storylines swirling around this weekend's tournament.
Special Kickoff: MSOE President Dr. Hermann Viets will participate in a ceremonial kickoff ahead of the Raider men's 3:30 p.m. match.
The Field: Men's and women's teams from Loras, Calvin and North Park will be joining the Raiders this weekend. Of the six teams, three were nationally-ranked in the NSCAA National Preseason Poll and five made the NCAA Tournament last season. Loras' men enter the season No. 2 in the nation and were in the Final Four last season, while the women were No. 11 and went to the Sweet 16. North Park's men were ranked 19th and the Calvin women were receiving votes. The Calvin men's side has played in the NCAA Championship game in two of the last four seasons.
The Tournament: Friday's tournament schedule features four games, MSOE vs. North Park and Loras vs. Calvin on both the men's and women's sides. The winners of those games advance to Saturday's championship matches, while the other two teams will play in a consolation match. Any ties in Friday's matches or Saturday's finals will be settled with a penalty kick shootout following overtime.

Familiar Face: North Park head men's coach John Born was the MSOE head men's soccer coach from 1995-98, immediately preceding current head man Jimmy Banks. He led the team to a 12-win improvement between his first and final seasons with the Raiders. Born is also a Concordia Wisconsin alum, where he played his college soccer for Dan Harris, MSOE's Director of Athletics.
MSOE Soccer Field: MSOE's newest facility was constructed on top of an in-ground, 780-car parking facility. The field will be used for collegiate soccer, lacrosse, rugby and youth sports. As an extension of the Kern Center, it further supports MSOE's commitment to student wellness and development as a whole person. In addition, there will be a small ground-level public park on the northern end of the site along Water Street. The $30 million project is the first major development of its kind in the Park East Corridor. The development was largely supported with a very generous donation from Drs. Robert and Patricia Kern.
