Men’s Soccer Ends California Trip With Loss

SANTA CRUZ, California – Senior Sean Tabbert scored his first goal of the season and the MSOE men's soccer team tacked on a late own goal but it was not enough in a 3-2 loss to Pacific (Ore.) Sunday afternoon on the final day of the SlugFest hosted by UC-Santa Cruz.

The Raiders (1-1) trailed early for the second-straight game but came back to tie the game quickly. Unfortunately, the Boxers (1-1) cancelled out Tabbert's equalizer just 17 seconds later and added a key insurance goal in the second half to prevail.

Pacific got on the board in the 16th minute for a brief 1-0 lead. The lead lasted until just past the start of the 24th minute. Senior Braden Andryk played Tabbert a keen through ball. Tabbert then blasted a shot from the top of the penalty area, which deflected off a defender and into the goal.

The designated home side quickly re-asserted the one-goal lead and made it 3-1 in the 62nd minute.

Andryk set up another goal in the 79th minute, doing his part and letting a defensive miscue account for the rest. Andryk took a free kick and sent his set piece goal bound. Attempting to punch the ball away, the keeper inadvertently sent the ball careening into the net for an own goal and a tight 3-2 score.

MSOE pushed forward to the last moments of regulation but could not come up with another equalizer. The Red & White outshot the Boxers 8-1 in the second half and 18-10 for the match. Andryk took 11 shots himself, putting six on frame.

Sophomore Patrick Grund made his first collegiate start in goal and stopped a pair of shots. Leyton Thommasen made eight saves for Pacific.

The Raiders return to Wisconsin and the friendly confines of Viets Field for their next match, Wednesday against Lawrence.
