PLYMOUTH, Wisconsin – Freshman Rade Novakovich notched his second hat trick of the season to lead the MSOE men's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Lakeland Wednesday night at Taylor Field.
Novakovich staked the Raiders (14-3, 10-1 NACC) to a 3-0 halftime lead with a pair of first-half scored and made it 4-0 before the Muskies (3-15, 0-11 NACC) added a consolation goal late.
Senior Stephen Bagin also found the back of the net, scoring the opening goal just 5:30 into the match. The early score set the tone for the Red & White and came off an assist from freshman Jack Van Dyke.
The score remained 1-0 after 30 minutes before Novakovich went to work with back-to-back goals just 1:23 apart. His first tally came in the 31st minute off an assist from sophomore Alexander Vujovic. Then, in the 32nd minute, sophomore Joey Schauer played provider this time as the Raiders opened a 3-0 lead.
MSOE would get its 4-0 lead just over five minutes after halftime. Freshman Konrad Knap set up the score, which Novakovich finished for his 16th goal of the season.
Lakeland would get on the board in the 83rd minute, at which time the result was not in doubt.
The Red & White held a commanding 15-6 shot advantage for the match and took all eight corner kicks in the match.
Junior Patrick Grund made the start in goal and stopped one shot in 53-plus minutes. He was one of three keepers to see action, as senior Ryan Snyder made one save in 30-plus minutes of his own and freshman Sam Paxton closed out the game with 6:35 of untested action.
MSOE is the No. 1 seed in the NACC Tournament and returns to the field in the semifinals Oct. 31. The team will take on the lowest remaining seed at Viets Field.
