MADISON, Wisconsin – The MSOE men's tennis team defeated Edgewood in the NACC Tournament Semifinals but fell to Concordia Wisconsin in the finals to see its season come to an end Sunday afternoon at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
The Raiders (9-17) swept doubles play to get off to a 3-0 start in a 5-2 win over the Eagles (10-16) before seeing the Falcons (20-6) take all three doubles points on their way to a 5-0 win and the conference title.
Against Edgewood, all three doubles matches finished 8-4 in favor of MSOE. Senior John Price and freshman David Chon teamed for a win at No. 1, senior Tom Smith and freshman Luke Nelson played at No. 2, while seniors Austin Campbell and Tyler Haanen were victorious in the No. 3 position.
Smith and Nelson then clinched the match with singles wins.
Smith played at No. 3 and won 6-3, 6-2 to expand the Raiders' lead in the match to 4-0. The Eagles then pulled back points at No. 1 and No 2 singles to make it 4-2. At No. 4 singles, Nelson scored a 6-1, 6-3 to clinch the match and send the Red & White to the championship match.
CUW came out of doubles ahead 3-0 after a pair of tight matches in the top two positions, as Price and Chon pushed their opponents down to the wire before falling 9-7 at No. 1. In the second doubles position, Smith and Nelson fell 8-5.
Needing just two more points to clinch the match, the Falcons won at No. 5 and No. 3 to do the job.
The Raiders looked to earn back some points in singles, leading in two unfinished matches and playing tight in another. Price was ahead 6-4, 2-2 at No. 1 and Nelson 6-1, 4-2 at No. 4 when the match was called. At No. 6, Runke pushed his opponent to a tiebreak in the first set of a match that was 6-7 (6-8), 0-1 when the team match concluded.
