MT. VERNON, Iowa - Junior Jerome Rhodes broke the school high jump record for the third-straight meet to start the season and senior Matt Waech won the 400m to pace the MSOE men's track & field team at the Hilltop Invitational, hosted by Cornell College Saturday.
The Raiders scored 55 points to take third at the meet. Loras topped the 12-team field, scoring 83 points to edge second-place Dubuque with 80.
Rhodes, reset his own school mark, winning the high jump with a final height of 6-9 1/2. Two weeks ago, he cleared 6-8 at the Private College Invitational. Senior Mike Cosentino was sixth in the event, posting a height of 6-0 3/4.
Waech ran 51.28 to win the 400m, while adding another top-five finish in the long jump and with the 4x400m relay. He leapt 19-5 1/2 for fourth, while freshman Mike Van Alstyne was eight with a jump of 18-10 1/2. Van Avlstyne joined Waech, junior Dan Franke and sophomore Joe Buichl on the relay, taking second in 3:29.20.
Van Alstyne also took third in the triple jump with a distance of 39-10 3/4. Senior Ryan Moldenhauer was fifth at 37-0 1/2 and freshman Brian Witkowski jumped 35-9 1/2 for sixth. Buichl added another top-five finish of his own, taking fourth in the finals of the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.59.
MSOE's other relay, the distance medley, was fourth. Seniors Scott Loftus, Trevor Koziczkowski, Milan Johnson and freshman Austin Wright ran a tie of 11:25.70. Loftus was eighth in the 800m, crossing the line in 2:07.10, and Koziczkowski was 10th in the mile in 4:41.87.
The Raiders had five top-10 finishes over three other events, including a trio of runners in the 3000m. Sophomore Ben Miller led the way in fifth qwith a time of 9:27.87. Junior Brian Janus was sixth in 9:30.33 and junior Jeff Sparks was ninth in 9:41.89.
MSOE returns to action next Saturday at the UW-Parkside Classic in Kenosha.
