KENOSHA, Wis. – Senior Jerome Rhodes and sophomore Ben Miller each broke school records, while the MSOE track & field team posted four individual championships in finishing second at the NACC Indoor Championships Saturday at Carthage College.
The Raiders finished with 125 points to post a third-straight conference runner-up finish. Aurora claimed the team championship with 186.50 points.
Rhodes broke his own school record in the high jump for the fifth time in seven meets this season. He cleared 6-10 1/4 to claim the conference title. Senior Mike Cosentino also scored in the event, finishing with a final height of 6-4 for sixth.
Miller's record came in the 5000m, where he ran a time of 15:39.73 to take third and eclipse the school mark of 15:42.03 set by Zak Lutz in 2010. Senior Trevor Koziczkowski placed fifth in the event, running 15:51.50. Miller added a runner-up finish in the 3000m, as well. He crossed the line in that event in 8:57.21 to miss top honors by just 0.86 seconds.
Sophomore Joe Buichl won two more events and senior Matt Waech won one of his own for MSOE. Buichl won both the 55m hurdles and 200m events. In the hurdles, he topped the preliminary field with a time of 8.11 and lowered that time to 7.97 to win in the finals. Sophomore Brad Lorr also scored in the event, taking sixth in 9.03.
In the 200m, Buichl edged Waech by just 0.04 seconds to win the event in 22.94. Waech gave the Red and White the top two finishers in 22.98. Waech led the field in the 400m, finishing the race in 50.33. Junior Dan Franke was sixth in 52.59.
Buichl, Waech, Franke and freshman Mike Van Alstyne combined on a second-place showing in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:29.30. Van Alstyne had a strong meet, taking second in the long jump and third in the triple jump. In the long jump, he leapt 21-4 1/4 and he jumped 41-5 3/4 in the triple. Waech was third in the long jump with a distance of 21-0 1/2 and senior Ryan Moldenhauer was seventh at 20-2 1/2. Moldenhauer also scored in the triple jump with a leap of 40-2 3/4 for fifth.
The Raiders' distance medley relay also scored second-place points, finishing in 10:49.50. Senior Kan Patack, juniors Garrett Farin and Brian Janus and freshman Austin Wright ran the race. Janus was one of three other Red and White scorers. He was fifth in the 800m with a time of 2:00.93.
Lorr added a second scoring effort, taking sixth in the pole vault with a height of 10-11 3/4. Freshman Brad Wasilewski scored in the shot put, throwing 40-10 1/2 for eighth.
