WAUKESHA, Wisconsin – Senior Austin Wright won the 3000m steeplechase to highlight a strong first meet of the 2017 outdoor season for the MSOE men's track & field team at the Pioneer Invitational hosted by Carroll University Saturday.
The Raiders finished fifth in the 13-team field with 53.5 points, trailing fourth place by just four points.
Wright ran a time of 9:51.60 in the steeplechase for the win while junior Trey Horbinski was second in 10:00.05. Both runners scored over several other events, as well. Wright placed seventh in the javelin with a toss of 146-0. Meanwhile, Horbinski finished sixth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.91 and ran with the team's top 4x400m relay.
In the relay event, Horbinski teamed with his twin brother Tripp Horbinski, senior Nick Avila, and freshman Avery Bobo. The quartet posted a time of 3:40.07. The team fielded a second relay in the event, which placed fifth in 3:47.39.
Tripp Horbinski posted a runner-up finish of his own, taking second in the 10,000m. He ran 34:18.73 ahead of junior teammate Hail Kazik in fourth place with a time of 35:06.87. Avila and Bobo also scored in events, individually. Avila ran 2:01.57 for sixth place in the 800m event. Bobo was tied for seventh in the long jump with a distance of 20-11 1/4.
Senior Michael Van Alstyne rounded out MSOE's scorers with a pair of performances in the triple jump and the 400m. In the triple jump, he leaped 40-8 3/4 and took fifth. He also ran 52.66 in the 400m and finished seventh.
The Raiders are back in action next Saturday at the Private College Invitational hosted by Ripon.
