RIPON, Wisconsin – Senior Nick Avila won the 3000m steeplechase and the MSOE men's track & field team placed fifth at the Wisconsin Private College Championships Saturday at Ripon College.
The Raiders scored 73 points at the meet to take fifth among 12 teams.
Avila led a strong Red & White contingent in the steeplechase, pacing the field in 10:23.82. He edged junior Tripp Horbinski for top honors as MSOE posted three of the top four finishers. Horbinski ran 10:24.66 and junior Collin Rink finished fourth in 10:57.00.
Senior Austin Wright scored in three events on the day, peaking with a runner-up finish in the 5000m. He posted a time of 16:11.31 and was joined on the scorer's stand by junior Hail Kazik in sixth place with a time of 17:08.03. Wright was also runner-up in the 1500m and placed fourth in the javelin. He posted a time of 4:09.79 in the 1500m and threw 153-6 in the javelin.
Junior Trey Horbinski also scored in the 1500m, taking fourth in 4:11.07, and was also fourth in the 800m with a time of 2:03.28.
MSOE scored in two more events, including two athletes in the discus throw. Sophomore Miroslav Stojanovic took fourth in the event with a distance of 128-3. Freshman Derek Schrimpf was sixth with a throw of 119-6. Senior Michael Van Alstyne rounded out the scorers in fourth place of the long jump. He leaped 20-7 1/4 in the event.
The Raiders get a week off before getting back to action at the St. Norbert College Invitational April 22.
