LISLE, Illinois – Senior Austin Wright won the 3000m steeplechase and broke the school record in the javelin in leading the MSOE men's track & field team to fifth place at the 2017 NACC Outdoor Championships Friday and Saturday at Benedictine University.
The Raiders finished with 54 points in the 10-team field, finishing just eight points out of fourth place.
Wright led four scorers in the steeplechase for MSOE, running a time of 9:49.42. Junior Trey Horbinski was runner-up in 10:00.53 and junior Tripp Horbinski was fifth in 10:28.34. Senior Nick Avila rounded out the scorers in eirhgh with a time of 10:32.73.
In the javelin, Wright threw 172-8 as runner-up, which easily broke the school record by six feet, six inches. Kevin Diedrich had held the record of 166-0 since 2010. Sophomore Miro Stojanovic also scored in the event, throwing 140-10 for sixth place.
Wright also led three scoring runners in the 5000m, where he placed third with a time of 15:58.99. Freshman Nick Bath finished seventh with a time of 16:20.27 and Tripp Horbinski was eighth in 16:35.19.
Trey Horbinski added another scoring performance of his own, placing fifth in the 1500m. He finished in 4:06.35.
The Raiders scored two more athletes in field events and took eighth in each of the two relay events. In the long jump, senior Michael Van Alstyne was sixth with a distance of 43-7 3/4 and freshman Derek Schrimpf placed eighth with a throw of 124-0 in the discus throw.
Van Alstyne, Avila, sophomore McCoy Swanson, and freshman Avery Bobo made up the 4x400m relay, which ran a time of 3:34.70. In the 4x100m relay, it was Swanson, Trey Horbinski, Bobo, and senior Devon Searfoss teaming for a time of 46.81.
The Raiders will next send a partial squad to last chance qualifiers in the Dr. Keeler Invitational next weekend and the Gregory Invitational May 18-19, both at North Central College.
