Raiders Downed By Clarke In Three Sets

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE men's volleyball team hung with NAIA No. 7 Clarke through two sets, but could not break through in falling 25-21, 25-23, 25-12 Wednesday evening at the Kern Center.

The Raiders (2-6) were playing their fourth ranked opponent in nine days, played catch up in a tight first set before playing from the lead for much of the second against the Crusaders (11-2).

Junior Nick Manning led the way for MSOE with 16 kills. Freshman Logan Baerenwald had eight kills and sophomore Brett Herbers seven.

Joe Biros led Clarke with 11 kills and Tyler Wills had 10 as the visitors hit .372 for the match.

In the opening set, CU got off to a 6-1 start, but the Raiders battled back to make it a two-point difference at 13-11. While it could get no closer, it hung around and was still within 23-21 before the Crusaders scored the final two points to take the set.

Set two saw the Red and White jump out to its own 6-2 early lead and still led by four at 14-10. Clarke caught up to tie the score at 19-19, but MSOE did not back down. After another tie at 21-21, the Crusaders scored back-to-back points for the cushion necessary to take the frame.

Clarke scored eight of the first nine points of the final set and never looked back in claiming the match.

The Raiders have a week off before returning to action next Wednesday at Dominican.
