Raiders Down Stars In Five-Game Thriller

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Junior Nick Manning had a double-double of 18 kills and 14 digs to lead the MSOE men's volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-21, 17-25, 23-25, 15-7 victory over Dominican Wednesday evening at the Igini Sports Forum.

The Raiders (3-6, 1-0 CVC) opened conference play with their second five-game thriller with the Stars (5-5, 0-1 CVC) this season and snapped a six-game losing streak in the process.

Freshman Logan Baerenwald finished with 13 kills and sophomore Brett Herbers notched 12 while hitting .579 in the match.

Zachery Sinn led Dominican with 17 kills and Charlie Spry had 13.

Despite winning the first two games, MSOE needed a decisive performance in the fifth to shoot down the Stars. In the final frame, the Raiders hit .889 with eight kills on nine attacks to jump out to an 8-2 lead and not look back.

In the first game, the Red and White scored eight-straight points to break a 6-6 tie and take a commanding lead. It was going for game point at 24-15, but DU resisted the final point until 24-20 before a Manning kill ended the game. The second set saw MSOE build a 19-12 lead and roll to the victory.

Dominican staved off defeat with back-to-back wins in sets three and four. It played from the lead for the most part over the two frames, jumping ahead early in the fourth and forcing the fifth set.

The Raiders return to action Friday, playing at No. 8 Lakeland.
