MILWAUKEE – The MSOE men's volleyball team was defeated by Mount St. Joseph in three sets Friday evening at the Kern Center 25-13, 25-22, 25-18.
The Raiders (4-16, 1-6 CVC) dropped their seventh-straight match, dating back to their first meeting with the Lions (16-8, 4-3 CVC) two weeks ago.
Freshman Scott Boyk had a team-high eight kills and six digs for MSOE. Freshman Frank Tokarz had seven kills and sophomore Brett Herbers added six. Freshman Michael Schmidt had three service aces in the match and freshman Joe Humpal tallied two.
Alex Vohland had 11 kills and a .450 attack percentage for MSJ. Toby Birnbrich hit .562 on his way to nine kills.
MSOE was slow out of the gate, committing nine attack errors on the way to a -.040 attack percentage in the first set. In the second set, the Raiders fell behind 10-5 early, but battled back to pull within one on four occasions. The Red and White made it 19-18, but MSJ went on a 5-1 run to force set point. MSOE fended off three set points before succumbing.
The Lions pulled away again in the final set, scoring four-straight points to break a 5-5 tie. The score was 14-11 when the visitors rattled off a 9-3 run. The Raiders did respond with four-straight points, but MSJ scored the final two points to take the match.
The Raiders return to the court Saturday, hosting Fontbonne at the Kern Center at 3 p.m.
