ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Sophomore Sam Stealey had a team-best 13 kills and sophomore Neil Naughton had nine kills on 10 attacks to send the No. 15-ranked MSOE men's volleyball team to a 25-14, 25-16, 25-17 sweep of Fontbonne Friday night at MABEE Gymnasium.
The Raiders (6-4, 3-0 MCVL) hit .409 as a team and remained perfect in conference play, while snapping the Griffins' (6-2, 0-1 MCVL) five-match winning streak in their MCVL opener.
Stealey finished with a .545 attacking percentage, while Naughton's was a near-perfect .900. Sophomore Bryant Holland also had nine kills with a pair of service aces in the match. Sophomore Quin Krisik tallied 41 assists in just three sets on the night.
TJ Vorva and Brendon Schwartze had six kills apiece to lead Fontbonne.
The Raiders broke open tight sets in each of the two frames, closing things out with back-breaking runs each time. In the opener, they led 14-2 and scored 11 of the final 13 points to take the game. Then, in set two, the Red & White led 15-13 before finishing on a 10-3 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
MSOE attacked at a .520 clip in the first game with 16 kills against just three errors, following that up with 17 kills and four errors for a .448 hitting percentage in set two.
The Raiders got off to a fast start in the final frame, jumping out to a quick 5-1 lead and building their advantage to 14-7. They held off Fontbonne the rest of the way, finishing the match off with three of the final four points.
After hitting .294 in the final set, MSOE finished at .409 for the night. It tallied 48 kills and just 12 errors, while limiting the Griffins to a .056 hitting percentage for the match with just 21 kills.
The Raiders continue their road trip through the region Saturday at MCVL newcomer Greenville.
