SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – Sophomore Sam Stealey finished with 18 kills and hit .342 for the match to lead the 14th-ranked MSOE men's volleyball team to a 25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 25-15 victory over Lakeland Friday evening at Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Raiders (14-6, 9-0 MCVL) remained perfect in league play and tied for first place, while creating a two-match lead in the loss column over the Muskies (15-7, 8-2 MCVL) in the standings.
Junior Scott Boyk joined Stealey in double-digit kills and hitting over .300, tallying 11 kills on .350 hitting on the night. Sophomore Bryant Holland added seven kills and 12 digs, while sophomore Quin Krisik had six to go with 41 assists and 17 digs.
Lakeland had four different player notch a team-best nine kills in a balanced effort.
MSOE showed resiliency in the match, overtaking the Muskies in each of the sets it won. In the opener, Lakeland jumped out to an 18-12 lead before the Raiders rattled off a 9-3 run.
Then, in the third set, they overcame an early 8-4 LC lead with a 7-2 run to make it 11-9. After the score was tied at 11-11, MSOE put the game out of reach with a 9-4 run. Finally, a 13-3 run pushed the Red & White past the home team after it had fell behind 8-6. The stretch gave the Raiders a 19-11 advantage and they would go on to close out the win with six of the last eight points.
MSOE hit .219 on the night, rebounding from a .051 hitting clip in the second-set loss to hit .351 in the third. It limited Lakeland to just .117 hitting on the night and out-killed the home team 56-38.
The Raiders continue their league weekend Saturday at Marian.
