KENOSHA, Wis. – The No. 13 MSOE men's volleyball team saw its post-season run come to an end with a 25-21, 25-22, 25-18 loss to No. 3 Carthage Saturday afternoon at Tarble Arena.
The second-seeded Raiders (18-8) hung with the top-seed Red Men (27-1) over the first two sets, but lost momentum in the decisive third game.
Carthage was led by Griddin Shields and his 14 kills. Matt Reinsel had 39 assists in just three sets for the home team.
The opening game was tight early, with the Raiders facing a slight 7-6 deficit when the Red Men rattled off a 6-1 run to take control. Then, in the second set, MSOE jumped out to a 5-2 lead only to see the home team score nine of the next 10 points to take an 11-6 lead. The Red & White fought back within one, but could not overtake Carthage.
The Raiders looked to take charge in the final period, overcoming a 5-2 deficit with a 6-1 run for an 8-6 lead. They were still ahead when the Red Men went on a 7-1 run to put the match out of reach.
MSOE hit just .167 in the match. It had attack percentages of .242 in the first set and .280 in the second, but that figure dropped to .026 in the final frame. Carthage hit .500 in the first set and .419 in the third to settle at .360 on the day.
