MILWAUKEE – Freshman Jake Christensen finished with 14 kills and the MSOE men's volleyball team hit .333 in sweeping past Greenville 25-14, 25-23, 25-15, Saturday afternoon at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (5-1, 5-0 MCVL) remained perfect in league play by downing the Panthers (4-10, 1-9 MCVL) for their fifth-straight win and fourth sweep.
Manuel Benitez led Greenville with nine kills.
The opening set was tight for nearly the entire length until the Raiders closed on a 12-2 run to provide a lopsided score line. Tied at 19-19, the Red & White scored six-straight points and, minutes later, rattled off the final five of the game. The team hit a robust .600 with 10 kills against just one error in 15 attacks.
Greenville jumped out to a 10-4 lead in game two, but MSOE rallied for another touch-and-go frame. This time, the teams battled down to the end. Facing the six-point deficit, the Raiders scored the next three points, then scored four-straight points to start a 6-1 run to take the lead at 17-16. The teams went back and forth with three ties down the stretch before MSOE was able to score the final two points to break a 23-all tie and claim a 2-0 lead.
The Raiders broke open the third set early, going on a 12-3 run to turn a 3-2 lead into a 10-point cushion at 15-5. They rode the big lead to the victory, with the Panthers pulling no closer than eight down the stretch.
MSOE's defense was strong as it limited Greenville to just .078 attacking, including a -.130 clip in the third set.
The Raiders return to action against Nazarene in the first match of three scheduled to be played at Wittenberg next Friday and Saturday.
