ADRIAN, Michigan – Senior Joe Humpal had 19 kills and the No. 14-ranked MSOE men's volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Adrian 17-25, 22-25 25-14, 25-16, 15-9 Saturday morning at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center.
The Raiders (19-3, 15-2 MCVL) hit under .100 in each of the first two games to fall in a hole to the Bulldogs (3-19, 2-14 MCVL) but righted the ship to win the next three frames and the match.
Avery Johnson led Adrian with 10 kills and Noah Marcinkowski had nine.
After falling behind with uncharacteristic hitting performances, the Raiders got back and hit .475 over the final three sets to complete the comeback. It started with a .600 clip in the third set in which the Red & White tallied 17 kills against just two errors. The Bulldogs had scored the first two points of the set but MSOE responded with the next six. Then, as it led 9-6 the team rattled off another 8-2 run to lead 17-7 and never looked back.
The Raiders then tied the match with a decisive fourth set. They seemed to build on the third-set momentum with the first four points of the period. Adrian would eventually tie the score at 8-8 before another 4-0 run gave the Red & White separation. It then closed the game on an 8-2 run.
In the decisive fifth set, MSOE scored five-straight points to break a 4-4 tie and eventually opened up a 14-7 lead after three-straight points before Humpal ended the match with his 19th kill of the match.
The Raiders finished the match hitting .250 with 20 more kills than their hosts (52-32). They also equaled a season-high with 14 total blocks.
MSOE has two chances for their first 20-win season before the end of the regular season, returning to action Friday in a home match against Benedictine.
