MILWAUKEE – Sophomore Danny Martens of the MSOE men's volleyball team was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association First Team, the coaches association announced today.
Martens was named the NACC Defensive Player of the Year and was a member of the All-NACC First Team.
The lone libero named to the AVCA First Team, Martens played in 25 matches this season and set a school record with 312 digs. He reached double-figures in digs 19 times with a pair of 20-dig outings and led the NACC with 3.35 digs per set. In 14 matches against Division I and ranked Division III programs, he averaged 3.42 digs.
Martens is the second player in program history named an All-American after Quin Krisik was picked for the second team in 2015. He is also the third MSOE student-athlete named to an All-America First Team in department history after Connor Toomey (Hockey) in 2012 and Logan Andryk (Men's Soccer) in 2015 and 2016.
The Raiders went 14-12 this season and advanced to the conference semifinals. They posted an 8-4 record and placed third in the inaugural season of NACC competition. The schedule included 15 matches against nationally-ranked teams in Division III or NAIA and a pair of wins over Division I programs.
