PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Freshman Holly Denfeld posted a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds, but it was not enough as the MSOE women's basketball team fell to host UW-Platteville at the Tip-Off Classic Saturday afternoon at Bo Ryan Court.
The Raiders (0-2) had three players score in double figures, but could not match the balance of the Pioneers (4-1), who saw four players score at least 13 points.
Denfeld represented the Raiders on the Tip-Off Classic All-Tournament Team and was the tournament's top rebounder.
MSOE jumped out to a very early lead, but Platteville responded and slowly built its lead through the first half, peaking at a 31-16 advantage at 7:01. The score was 35-23 when the Raiders rattled off a 7-2 run heading into halftime to pull within 37-30.
Unfortunately, UWP opened the second half on a 9-0 run and never looked back. The Raiders would fight back as close as 12 on multiple occasions, but would get no closer.
Senior Shannon Larson added 12 points before fouling out, while freshman Margaret Pugh finished with 11 points. Junior Bre'Ana Strong followed up an 18-point outing Friday with nine more points in the game and junior Marly Trier chipped in eight.
Alyssa Krajco led all scorers with 18 for the Pioneers. Mykaela Brandt scored 16, Stacy Clark 14 and Rachel Cropp added 13 in the win.
The Red and White defense forced 19 Platteville turnovers, turning them into 25 points, but was unable to prevent the home team from shooting 50.8 percent from the field. MSOE shot 36.5 percent in the game.
The Raiders return to action next Saturday, hosting Rockford in their home and NACC opener at the Kern Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
