MILWAUKEE – The MSOE women's basketball team went on a 22-4 run that spanned nearly 10 minutes of the second half in scoring a 71-67 victory over Rockford Saturday afternoon at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (2-2, 1-0 NACC) used the run to erase an 11-point lead by the Regents (2-2, 0-1 NACC) and take the lead for good down the stretch.
Sophomore Megan Kroll finished with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds, while senior Shannon Larson scored 15 point. Junior Marly Trier scored 12 points to go with three steals and freshman Holly Denfeld had nine points and 10 boards.
MSOE pulled ahead at the end of the first half and carried a 36-34 lead to start the second. Unfortunately, the Regents scored the first eight points after halftime to take a 44-36 lead at the 16:30 mark. The visitors' lead peaked at 11 at 51-40 with 14:19 to go.
Trier kick-started the decisive 22-4 run with an old fashioned three-point play moments later and freshman Corrine Sanford capped it with a jumper at 5:05 to put the Raiders ahead by seven at 62-55. Despite Rockford pulling within a possession numerous times, it was a lead MSOE did not relinquish as it answered each time to keep RU at bay.
The Raiders have now won back-to-back games after a 104-49 win at Mt. Mary on Monday. They sealed this victory by going 26-for-33 (.788) at the free throw line. They shot 33.8 percent from the field. The Regents shot marginally better at 37.7 percent and converted on 18-of-25 attempts at the charity stripe.
Four of Rockford's five starters scored in double-digits, led by Lindsay Lengjak's 15 points.
MSOE returns to action Wednesday at Marian. The Raiders and Sabres tip off at 7 p.m. in Fond du Lac, Wis.
