MILWAUKEE – Freshman Holly Denfeld scored 24 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the MSOE women's basketball team to an 84-67 victory over Dominican Saturday afternoon at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (5-3, 4-1 NACC) finished the game on a 19-6 run to put away the Stars (0-9, 0-5 NACC) for MSOE head coach Jessica Ott's 100th career coaching win.
The Red and White opened the game on a 12-2 run and expanded its lead as high as 18 at 34-16 before coasting into halftime with a 43-30 advantage.
In the second half, Dominican rattled off an 8-0 run to pull within five points and cut its deficit to four points on two occasions. Kaylee Paciora hit a jumper to make it 65-61 with 6:53 remaining. The Raiders then scored 12-straight points to pull away and finished the game on a 19-6 run.
After allowing DU back into the game at the free throw line, the Raider defense stepped up down the stretch. The Stars were 19-of-25 from the free throw line before that point, but made just one trip to the charity stripe over the final 6:53. MSOE limited the visitors to just 3-of-15 shooting from the field.
Denfeld shot 11-of-20 in the game on her way to a third double-double this season. She paced four Red and White players in double-figures. Sophomore Megan Kroll had 19 points, junior Bre'Ana Strong finished with 14 points and three steals, and junior Marly Trier scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Paciora posted a team-high 18 points for Dominican. Allie Tapanes and Katie Budz scored 15 points apiece and Alyssa Hernandez tallied 12.
The Raiders return to action Tuesday with their second of four games in eight days. MSOE hosts North Central at 7 p.m.
