AURORA, Ill. – The MSOE women's basketball team trimmed a late 13-point lead to just four, but could get no closer in falling to Aurora 89-81 Wednesday evening at Thornton Gymnasium.
The Raiders (8-5, 6-2 NACC) trailed the Spartans (6-7, 5-3 NACC) 76-63 with just 3:23 to play, but went on a quick 12-3 run to pull within 79-75 on a free throw from freshman Holly Denfeld with 51 seconds to play.
Unfortunately, that's as close as MSOE would get. AU converted 10-straight free throws over the final minute to hold off the Red and White's advances.
Denfeld notched her seventh double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Four more players reached double-figures, as sophomore Megan Kroll also scored 18 points to go with four steals. Freshman Marisa Gerstbrein scored 15 points and freshman Corinne Sanford added 12 points, both off the bench. Finally, senior Shannon Larson tallied 10 points.
Shannon Koski led Aurora with 25 points and Shay Jenkins scored 24. Anna Roszkowski and Bethany Dorrington scored 19 points apiece, with Roszkowski added 12 rebounds for a double-double.
Both teams shot well from the field, but the Spartans were able to pull away at the free throw line. They shot 51.9 percent from the field, including 8-of-16 from three-point range, and finished 25-of-31 at the free throw line in the second half.
The Raiders countered with a 50.9 percent shooting clip and hit on 19-of-27 from the charity stripe.
MSOE returns to action Saturday, hosting Alverno at the Kern Center at 7 p.m.
