RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The MSOE women's basketball team opened the game on 21-5 run on its way to running past Dominican 51-39 Saturday afternoon at the Igini Sports Forum.
The Raiders (13-11, 11-8 NACC) snapped a five-game losing streak and reached 13 wins for the season, tied for the second-most in school history. They also clinched just their third season with a .500 record or better.
Freshman Corrine Sanford led MSOE with 14 points and senior Shannon Larson was the team's only other double-digit scorer with 12. Freshman Holly Denfeld scored just eight points, but pulled down 15 boards in the game.
Larson finished the game with 981 career points as she continues to get closer to becoming the eighth Raiders to score 1,000 career points.
The Stars (0-23, 0-18) were led offensively by Haley Tyler and Alyssa Hernandez, who each scored 13 points.
MSOE got off to a fast start defensively, shutting down the DU offense early on. On the other end of the floor, the offense got off to a strong start and led 21-6 on a Sanford three-pointer at the 6:17 mark of the first half. The Stars finished the frame strong, but the Red and White still carried a 26-15 lead into halftime.
After the break, Dominican continued to cut into the Raiders' lead, pulling within six a couple times in the early going of the half. Each time, MSOE responded and kept the home team at bay.
The Raiders got their lead back to double-digits in the closing minutes and held off the Stars down the stretch.
Defense was the key for MSOE, as it forced 29 turnovers and came away with 14 steals to limit DU to just 39 points and just 22.2 percent shooting. The scoring output was a season-low for an opponent this season. Sanford and junior Marly Trier each had a team-high four steals.
The Raiders return to action Tuesday, hosting crosstown rival Wisconsin Lutheran in the regular season finale.
