Women’s Basketball Dominates Second Half to Beat IIT

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE women's basketball team opened the second half on a 28-0 run and held Illinois Tech scoreless in the third quarter on its way to a 57-28 victory Saturday afternoon at Hotchkin Arena.

The Raiders (6-0, 4-0 NACC) never trailed in the game and stifled any momentum the Scarlet Hawks (0-8, 0-4 NACC) had when they closed the first half on a 6-0 run.

Junior Kayla Barreto had a game-high 15 points while junior Conner Bennett notched 10 points to go with eight rebounds. Senior Samantha Brooker was solid at both ends of the court with nine points, eight rebounds, and five steals. Sophomore Amy Reiser added six steals.

Shannon O'Donnell was the lone IIT player to register double-digits with 12 points. Three players chipped in four points each.

MSOE was in control the entire game, scoring the first six points of the game. The hosts cruised through much of the first half while never pulling away. The Red & White did open a 25-12 lead 2:25 before halftime but the Scarlet Hawks were able to rally with six-straight points at the end of the half to go into the break down just 25-18.

The Raiders then opened the second half on a mission to put away Illinois Tech. They outscored their opponents 18-0 in the third quarter and tallied the first 10 points of the final frame to open a 53-18 lead with just under five minutes remaining. The stretch included holding IIT without a field goal for 18:04 with 14-straight missed field goals and 10 turnovers.

MSOE shot 43.9 percent from the field, making seven 3-pointers. The team, remarkably, did not attempt a single free throw in the game. Meanwhile, the charity stripe kept the Scarlet Hawks in the game early. They went to the line 17 times in the game, making 12, while shooting just 22.9 percent from the field. The visitors attempted just four 3-pointers without a make.

The game marked the first since the Raiders joined the NACC in 2007-08 that they did not attempt a free throw.

The Red & White will put its perfect season on the line Tuesday, hosting nationally-ranked UW-Whitewater.
