MILWAUKEE – The MSOE women's basketball team held Edgewood to just under 28 percent shooting for the game in posting a 55-41 victory Saturday afternoon at Hotchkin Arena.
The Raiders (7-5, 5-3 NACC) rattled off a pair of 10-0 runs over the final 11 minutes of the opening half to open an 18-point lead over the Eagles (6-6, 3-4 NACC) and they held off the visitors in the second half.
Junior Kayla Barreto scored a game-high 16 points to go with seven rebounds. Senior Jamie Spanbauer added 15 points and senior Samantha Brooker pulled down 17 rebounds on the day. Senior Rachel Ruona added nine points in her first start of the season.
Abby Shane was Edgewood's lone double-digit scorer with 12 points.
The score was tight throughout the first quarter with MSOE seizing control in the final minute of the period. The Red & White scored the final four points of the first quarter and the first six of the second to open up a 21-11 lead.
The Raiders then added to that advantage with another 10-0 run, this time expanding their 26-18 lead to a game-high 18 points at 36-18 at halftime. They limited the Eagles to just 3-for-19 shooting in the period and outscored them 20-7.
Edgewood looked to fight back in the game but would get no closer than 11 points over the final 20 minutes.
MSOE shot 30.5 percent from the field, including 7-for-21 from three-point range. The Red & White also hit on 12-of-17 free throw attempts. At the other end, the Eagles finished the game shooting just 27.6 percent with 3-of-13 shooting from three-point range. They were limited to just seven free throw attempts in the game and made six.
The Raiders return to the court Tuesday at Wisconsin Lutheran.
