MILWAUKEE – The MSOE women's basketball team led wire-to-wire in downing Rockford 63-39 for its third-straight victory Thursday night at Hotchkin Arena.
The Raiders (10-8, 8-6 NACC) steadily pulled away from the Regents (1-16, 1-12 NACC) but put the game out of reach in the third quarter.
Junior Kayla Barreto led the way with 15 points, four assists, and three steals. Senior Jamie Spanbauer added 11 points, three assists, and three steals. Senior Samantha Brooker finished with eight points and eight rebounds while freshman Wendy Guan finished with five points, eight rebounds, and five assists in the game.
Linzy Keller paced Rockford with 14 points and Emily Cox added 10.
MSOE led wire-to-wire in the game and was never threatened in the game. The Regents did pull within one point late in the opening quarter but Barreto answered with a three-pointer and senior Samantha Brooker hit a layup in transition to make it 17-11 at the first intermission.
Barreto then outscored the visitors 10-9 in the second quarter as the Red & White pushed its lead as high as 11 points on two occasions. That included at halftime where the lead was 31-20.
The Raiders then opened the third quarter on a 17-4 run to put the game out of reach. They would outscore the Regents 23-9 in the period and lead by as many as 28 in the fourth quarter on the way to the victory.
MSOE shot 40.3 percent from the field, including 10-for-19 (52.6 percent) in the third quarter. The team also hit on 8-of-21 three-point attempts while forging a 43-33 rebounding edge and coming up with 15 steals in the game. Five different players registered multiple steals.
Rockford shot 27.7 percent from the field on the night, making just 5-of-17 from three-point range.
The Raiders return to the road Saturday with a break from conference play at Maranatha.
