Women’s Basketball Falls to Lakeland

MILWAUKEE – A big fourth quarter for the visitors proved to be the difference for the MSOE women's basketball team in a 70-51 defeat at the hands of Lakeland Thursday evening at Hotchkin Arena.

The Raiders (10-10, 8-7 NACC) led by as many seven in the first couple minutes of the fourth quarter before the Muskies (16-4, 12-3 NACC) closed the game on a 28-2 run.

Junior Kayla Barreto scored 15 points with three assists and three steals for the Red & White. Senior Jamie Spanbauer added 10 points, five assists, and four steals.

Megan Will scored a game-high 23 points for Lakeland but Miranda Jacobson propelled the team with a triple-double of 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. Amanda Majewski chipped in 11 points.

MSOE did well to fend off the Muskies at every turn in a tight third quarter, pulling away each time the game was within one possession. It looked like the Raiders would pull away once again when Barreto converted a four-point play at 8:47 of the fourth quarter to make it 49-42.

From that point, it was all Lakeland. The visitors scored the next seven points of the game to pull even. After a Red & White bucket, the Muskies scored 21 unanswered points over the remainder of regulation. All told, LU held a 30-6 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter.

The teams were tight after one quarter with the Red & White holding a slight 13-12 advantage. MSOE then broke the game open early in the second period, building on a 16-14 lead with 10-straight points to make it 26-14. The lead peaked at 13 when sophomore Britta Grayvold hit a three-pointer at 1:13 to bring the score to 31-18.

Lakeland scored the final five points of the half for a 31-23 score at halftime.

The Raiders finished the night shooting 37.5 percent from the field but converted on just 8-of-27 three-point attempts. They were also limited to just one free throw attempt on the night. The Muskies finished the game shooting 54.2 percent in the game after a 72.7 clip in the final period. They were just 3-of-8 from three-point range but reached the charity stripe 21 times with 15 makes.

MSOE returns to the court Saturday at Edgewood.
