Vandenbush Wins Weight Class in Collegiate Debut

OSHKOSH, Wisconsin – Freshman Helton Vandenbush won the 174-pound bracket as the MSOE wrestling team opened the 2017-18 season at the Dan Gable Open Saturday at UW-Oshkosh.

Vandenbush was one of three freshmen to post top-four finishes, as Drew Matticks wrestled his way into the first-place match at 165 pounds and Duncan Heath was in the third-place bout at 197 pounds.

Vandenbush went 3-0 on the day, opening with a fall in his first match in 3:27. After grinding out an 8-7 decision, he took top honors with a 6-4 sudden victory in the first-place match.

Matticks also opened with three-straight wins, scoring 5-1 and 3-0 decisions in his first two bouts. He then scored a 17-5 major decision to put himself into the top match. There, he fell 9-4, taking second.

At 197 pounds, Heath secured a 13-2 major decision in is first match. He then had to work his way through the wrestle-back portion of the bracket after a 7-2 decision. He earned his way into the third-place match with a 3-1 sudden victory win, then fell by fall.

MSOE also had wins by juniors Sam Rathburn and Ryan Snyder at the tournament. Rathburn rebounded from an opening two-point loss at 157 pounds to score wins by fall in 4:03 and major decision, 14-6. Snyder competed at 174 pounds and had a 9-8 decision go his way in his second match.

The Raiders return to the mat next Saturday at the Concordia Wisconsin Open.
