Bellile, Vandenbush Win CCIW Championships

NAPERVILLE, Illinois – Senior Austin Bellile and freshman Helton Vandenbush each won their weight classes to lead the MSOE wrestling team to a fifth-place showing at the 2018 CCIW Championships Thursday at North Central College.

The Raiders, who placed seventh in their first-ever appearance at the CCIW meet last season, scored 76 team points. They finished 20 points out of fourth place and 16 points ahead of sixth.

All told, MSOE had eight of its 10 wrestlers place, with freshman Drew Matticks finishing as runner-up at 165 pounds. Junior Sam Rathburn scored a fifth-place finish at 149 pounds, as did junior Ryan Snyder at 184 pounds, and freshman Mark Niewierowski at 125 pounds.

Junior Miro Stojanovic at 197 pounds and sophomore Jimmy Cushman at 141 pounds were each sixth.

Bellile repeated as CCIW champion with a pair of wins. After a bye as the top seed, he scored a fall in 5:21. Then, in the title bout, he scored a 3-0 shutout victory.

Vandenbush, meanwhile, emerged from the middle of his bracket to claim his title. He opened with a 6-4 decision victory, then scored a 7-3 win over the No. 2 seed. Then, in the first-place match, he took down No. 1 by a score of 6-5.

At 165 pounds, Matticks fell just short of a championship himself. He was seeded second in the bracket and opened with a fall in just 1:54. He advanced to the title match with a 13-2 major decision before suffering a 13-3 loss to settle for runner-up honors.

Rathburn won a pair of matches on the day, rebounding from an opening loss to secure a 10-3 victory in his first match of the consolation bracket. A subsequent loss relegated him to the fifth-place match, where he finished strong with a victory by fall in 4:43.

Snyder also scored his place by fall, heading to the fifth-place match after a pair of losses. Once there, he pinned his opponent in 4:20 to claim the match.

Stojanovic rounded out the team's match winners, wresting for the first time at 197 pounds this season. He opened with a loss in his first match, then went on to win 11-5 in his consolation bracket opener. His day ended with a pair of losses and a sixth-place finish.

The Raiders return to the mats Feb. 24 at the NCAA Regional Championships.
