MILWAUKEE – The MSOE wrestling team opened its season with the 15th Annual MSOE Invitational Saturday at Hotchkin Arena and placed 10th out of 14 teams.
The Raiders finished with 15 points in the team standings.
Sophomore Drew Matticks went 4-1 on the day to lead four multiple-match winners. Wrestling up at 174 pounds for the first time, he opened the day with a 15-0 technical fall win over 6:00. After a tough 3-2 decision sent him to the consolation bracket, he rebounded with a 9-5 win. He continued through the bracket with back-to-back major decisions, 13-3 and 12-4. Unfortunately, his day ended when he withdrew ahead of his next match with an injury.
Sophomore Helton Vandenbush and a pair of wrestlers at 197 pounds in senior Ryan Snyder and Duncan Heath scored two wins each. Vandenbush won 10-4 in his first match before falling 5-2. He came back with a 23-8 technical fall victory before another tight loss, this time 5-2.
At 197 pounds, Snyder and Heath each rebounded from opening losses for big wins in their second match. Snyder scored a fall in 4:13 followed by an 8-4 touchback decision. Heath's first win was a 21-5 technical decision. He followed that up with a 7-4 decision.
