DUBUQUE, Iowa – The MSOE wrestling team lost its first three dual meets of the season Saturday at the Dubuque Duals.
The Raiders (0-3) fell to the host Spartans 30-16, CCIW rival Wheaton 29-22, and UW-Stevens Point 35-9. MSOE conceded a pair of forfeits early in the lineup in each dual and found itself playing catch-up throughout.
In the opener, MSOE found itself down 20-0 heading into the 157-pound match before junior Jack Rathburn got the team on the board with the first of four-straight major decisions to pull within 20-16. Unfortunately, UD rebounded with a major decision at 197 pounds to clinch the victory.
The Thunder took the first 12 points and led 25-4 before another Matticks and Heath secured falls to make it close at the end.
In the finale, Matticks and Heath were the lone winners in a tough loss to the Pointers.
At 184 pounds, Matticks scored a 12-2 major decision, a fall in 1:19 against Wheaton, and finally a 4-2 decision, respectively, to continue his early-season success. He's now 11-1 on the season minus a medical forfeit in the first tournament of the season.
Heath secured his fall against the Thunder in 1:19 and battled for a 5-3 decision against UWSP.
The Rathburns each scored major decision wins against Dubuque. Jack won 12-3 at 157 while Sam followed 14-3 at 165. Sophomore Helton Vandenbush scored one of his two wins at 184 pounds in that dual, 14-6. He rebounded from a loss in his second bout to end on a high note against the Pointers.
The Raiders return to action in the new year at the Elmhurst Invitational Jan. 15.
