NOTRE DAME, Indiana – Junior Kassidy Girmscheid scored the game's lone goal in the 52nd minute to lead the MSOE women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over St. Mary's Saturday afternoon at Purcell Athletic Fields in the final game of the Belles Invitational.
The Raiders (2-0) was the lone team to win both of their games this weekend, earning a de facto tournament crown with the win over the Belles (1-1), who had also won Friday night.
MSOE outshot the host Belles, 10-2, in the first half, but could not break through for the opening score. Six of its shots went on goal, but each was turned away.
Then, on the team's first shot of the second frame, Girmscheid netted the eventual winner. She took a pass from junior Melina Lynn in the 52nd minute, carried the ball along the top of the 18-yard box and blasted a shot into the top right corner of the goal for the winner.
At the other end of the field, junior Mary McFee stopped all four of the shots she faced to post her first shutout of the season. For the match, the Red & White held a decisive 18-6 shot advantage, leading 9-4 in shots on goal. Thallia Robles kept SMC in the game with eight saves.
McFee and Girmscheid were each named to the Belles Invitational All-Tournament Team, joined by defenders junior Kelsey Hailey and senior Kait Riley. The defensive unit allowed just one goal in two games, while Hailey also had a goal and assist on Friday.
The Raiders return to action midweek, hosting St. Norbert Wednesday in their home opener. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
