MILWAUKEE – Senior Aly Loepfe scored in the 54th minute and the defense put together another strong effort as the MSOE women's soccer team defeated Dominican 1-0 in the NACC Championship game Saturday afternoon at Viets Field.
The Raiders (17-3-1) are repeat NACC Champions and now advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight season. The NCAA Tournament selection show is scheduled for Monday at 12:30 p.m. central time.
Senior Erika Spanbauer actually started the winning play, re-introducing a cleared corner kick back into the box. A Dominican defender did get a head on the ball next, but then junior Carley Mitus followed with a volley to keep the ball in front of the net and the 6-foot-1 Loepfe rose above the defense to put the ball into the net far post.
MSOE had the bulk of the scoring chances in the game, outshooting the Stars 12-2. In fact, the Raiders took the first 12 shots of the game, but was unable to break down a structured defensive plan by the visitors.
Their first chance to strike came in the 18th minute when senior Sara Travia was taken down just inside the box by the keeper. Vanessa Gonzalez made the save on the ensuing penalty kick, then stopped the rebound attempt at the post to keep the score level at 0-0.
DU's best chance came late in regulation on a scrum in the box. The Raiders could not clear the ball and Tania Paez was able to get a foot on the ball to send it on frame, but a defender on the line cleared the ball to safety to keep the 1-0 lead in tact.
The win was MSOE's eighth-straight of the season and its 22nd-straight against NACC competition.
