MILWAUKEE – Senior Aly Loepfe scored an equalizer early in the second half but Calvin pulled ahead in the 79th minute and prevailed 2-1 on the final day of the MSOE Invitational Saturday at Viets Field.
The Raiders (0-2) had fallen behind the Knights (2-0) on a 31st-minute score but got a foothold in the game at halftime and rallied for the equalizer just six-plus minutes after the break.
MSOE had its early chances but nonetheless saw the visitors strike first. Calvin would play with the momentum for the rest of the half, leading the Red & White to regroup at halftime.
An early corner kick in the second half set the game-tying play in motion. Senior Carly Mitus picked up her second assist of the season with her set piece directed at the top of the six-yard box. The 6-foot Loepfe rose above the competition and put her shot in the back of the net to breath new life into the match.
In just the third minute of the game, freshman Brooke Zidek had an optimistic shot on a seemingly open net turned away by a defender at the far post. Then, 20 minutes later, freshman Nora Adkins found herself through on goal, only to see her attempt sail just outside the post.
The Raiders also benefited from a team save, as senior Rachael Griffin kept the game level at 1-1 when she cleared a shot off the line.
In the 79th minute, Abby Koops scored the decisive goal for Calvin after a Jessica Paulson run down the far side. Once in the box, Paulson slotted a pass across to Koops, who knocked it in the net for the game-winner.
The Knights held a 15-6 shot advantage in the game, including 7-4 in shots on goal. Senior Mary McFee finished with five saves in the game.
MSOE is back in action right after Labor Day, heading to Kenosha Tuesday night to take on Carthage.
