Women’s Soccer Drops Opener at Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Michigan – Junior Jeray Riffel put the MSOE women's soccer team ahead in the second half but three goals in less than an eight-minute span propelled Kalamazoo to the season-opening 3-1 victory Friday afternoon at MacKenzie Field.

The Raiders (0-1) opened the scoring in the 66th minute but could not hold off the Hornets (1-0) and their three unanswered goals between the 72nd and 80th minutes.

After a scoreless first half, Riffel became the team's first goal-scorer of the season, converting a penalty kick in the 66th minute.

The lead would be short-lived as the hosts equalized just under seven minutes later and took the lead in the 77th minute. K-Zoo capped the scoring with an insurance goal in the 80th minute to put the game out of reach.

The Hornets held an 18-14 shot advantage in the match, including 10-7 in shots on target.

Junior Abbie Lorenz played the first half in goal and made five saves. Junior Allison Lessila played the second half and stopped two shots.

The Raiders continue their season-opening road trip in Michigan Saturday, playing at Calvin.
