OSHKOSH, Wisconsin – Sophomore Brooke Zidek scored a goal for the second-straight game and junior Abbie Lorenz preserved the shutout with six saves in the second half to lead the MSOE women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over St. Norbert Saturday afternoon at UW-Oshkosh.
The Raiders (1-3) picked up their first win of the season, going toe-to-toe with the Green Knights (1-3) in a thrilling back-and-forth game.
Zidek struck for the eventual game-winner unassisted in just the 19th minute and the defense made it hold up. Shots were tight, with MSOE posting a slight 17-14 advantage, but the team had to withstand a 10-1 St. Norbert advantage in corner kicks.
Juniors Allison Lessila and Lorenz split the game in goal with Lessila getting the start. She was not called on to make a save as the unit dealt with four corner kicks and just five total shots handily.
In the second half, the Red & White did not ease off the break but the Green Knights did pressure for the equalizer. Fortunately, the defense was, once again, up to the task. Lorenz stopped each shot she faced and the team turned away another six corner kicks.
At the other end of the field, MSOE put another four shots on target but was unable to add to its lead.
The Raiders continue play at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational Sunday, taking on the host Titans at 3:30 p.m.
